Spring 2011 Elections Juli D'Ann Ratheal for Vice President – Elementary Juli D’Ann Ratheal, Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB), teaches preservice and graduate inservice teachers in both the UTPB mathematics department and the College of Education. She has over 25 years teaching and administrative experience in the state of Texas at the K-12, community college, and university levels. During the spring of 2010, Dr. Ratheal led the committee that designed and authored the proposal submitted to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) requesting a graduate mathematics degree program for UTPB. Now, in addition to her duties as Associate Professor of Mathematics Education, she was recently appointed Director of the Mathematics Graduate Program for the newly approved graduate degrees at UTPB which will offer a master’s degree in mathematics with two possible program tracks: 1) Mathematics; or 2) Mathematics Education. Dr. Ratheal collaborates with regional K-12 districts on a number of state and federal grants that offer professional development to mathematics teachers. Currently, she is the Project Director of over $2.5 million in grants aimed at improving teachers’ content knowledge and instructional skills throughout the Permian Basin. In addition to her grant activities, Dr. Ratheal provides assistance pro bono to regional private, public, and charter schools or individual teachers as requested including classroom observations, workshops and campus visits to work with teachers who are having difficulties with either mathematical content or instructional strategies. She provides leadership in the following regional and state initiatives: 1) Mathematics Vertical Team; 2) College and Career Readiness Standards; and 3) AVID. She has been invited to speak and has presented at a number of international STEM conferences throughout the world as well as within the United States. She is a member of TCTM, NCTM, and the MAA professional organizations and is dedicated to her profession. She was recently awarded the La Macha Society award which is given to professors based on outstanding research and scholarly activities and was nominated by the UTPB College of Arts and Sciences as a candidate for the University of Texas Outstanding Teacher Award.
