Spring 2012 Elections Sandi Cooper earned her Ph.D. in Mathematics Education at Texas A&M University in 1994 and is currently an Associate Professor of Mathematics Education in the School of Education at Baylor University. She teaches undergraduate courses in the elementary certification program and graduate courses in mathematics education. The focus of her research is professional development of teachers, learning mathematics through inquiry-based activities, integrating children’s literature into mathematics instruction, and mathematical experiences in museums. Currently, she is serving on the Editorial Panel of NCTM’s Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School Journal from 2011-2014. Sandi served as Project Director and Co-Director of several funded projects including Eisenhower grants, a U.S. Department of Education Preparing Tomorrow’s Teachers for Technology (PT3) grant, and the inaugural program for the Texas Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics. She currently serves as Affiliates Director, Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE)(2009-2011), Past-President, Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators in Texas (AMTE-TX) (2010-2011), and President-Elect, Central Texas Council of Teachers of Mathematics (CTCTM) (2010-2011). Sandi has served as Co-Executive Director for the School Science and Mathematics Association (SSMA) from 2006-2009, and first President of AMTE-TX from 2008-2010. She has served as Conference Program Chair for the AMTE in 2007, Co-Program Chair for the 2008 NCTM Regional Conference in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and most recently on the program committee for the 2010 NCTM Regional Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico. At the state level, Sandi has made significant contributions by serving on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) review committee for K-2 (2010-2011), the Presidential Awards for Math and Science Teacher Committee for Texas in 2010, Program Chair for the T3 Regional Conference in Waco, Texas in 2008, Instructor for Teacher Quality Grant Project (University of North Texas) Geometry and Probability/Statistics for Middle School Teachers in the Rolling Plains Consortium in 2006, and Texas Master Math Teacher Program Standard Setting Committee in 2003. In addition, she has served as an Elementary Math Consultant for ESC Regions 12 and 17. Through these connections, Sandi has obtained Trainer of Trainers certification in Children’s Thinking in Measurement, Grade Bands K-5, and Mathematics TEKS Refinement, Grade Bands K-5. Sandi has been a member of NCTM for over 25 years and a member of TCTM since coming to Texas in 1990’s. She has presented at CAMT for many years and is sincerely interested in promoting effective mathematics instruction in our Texas classrooms. As Central Regional Director for TCTM, Sandi will bring leadership to this continued support for classroom teachers to enhance their mathematical instruction. [return to elections main page]
